Just when we thought you fabulous lot couldn’t get any more daring, along comes Marathon Man! Yes, as we settle into October with our thick socks and jumpers and the morning alarm opens our eyes to a cold, dark and drizzly scene outside, we can still feel rather grateful that we are not out running a marathon at 3am. And this is not just one marathon. Oh no, this is 27 of them! In 26 consecutive days!!
Mr Paul O’Boyle (now AKA Mr Incredible) has made an amazing commitment to run a marathon every morning from 1st to 26th October to raise money for Macmillan Caring Locally. His pledge to support our hospice in this way was of course met with some wide eyes and looks of concern but Paul is taking it all in his stride (pun intended) and has already completed his first 14 marathons despite the atrocious weather and ever decreasing temperatures. Paul was knocked off his bike by a drunk driver five years ago and following his amazing recovery with physio and speech therapy, he wanted to give something back. As we heard from the Prime Minister on Monday, cases of Covid-19 are on the rise again. While we don’t expect anything to change at the Macmillan Unit in the immediate future, we are happy to report that the team are very well prepared for the potential of a second wave and all the necessary precautions have been taken to ensure the safety of our staff, patients, their families and visitors. Please do look after yourselves and stay safe – we still have our fingers crossed that life will return to normal again soon. Until next time….
