Patient referrals to our service have tripled in the last ten years. The existing Macmillan Unit was built in 1974 and is now far too small for the number of people under our care. We have been setting aside funds to build a new Unit for many years. We have raised £6m so far, and in 2020 before the pandemic, the estimated cost to build a new Hospice was £12m.
After the pandemic the increased costs and current economic climate have added an approximate 40% on top of this cost, taking our target much further away.
Naturally this is very disappointing, but we strive to look at all options open to us to achieve our goal.
