Ann Allen

Ann Allen

Position: Trustee

Ann was born in Plymouth but moved to Bristol in 1979 and worked in Hotel and Hospitality Management whilst also being a Special Constable in the Avon & Somerset Constabulary. Ann eventually ended up working in Special Needs Schools for over 12 years partly due to her son being born very prematurely and diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Ann joined the Southmead Hospital Special Care Baby Unit Parents Group and became Chairperson and guided it through the process of becoming a registered charity. Ann also co-wrote a booklet for new parents on what to expect when having a baby in SCBU that was sponsored by British Gas.

After many weekend visits Ann and her husband decided to relocate to Christchurch in 2010 and enjoy an early retirement. Due to working in the local Doctors Surgery Ann became aware of the 'Mac Unit' and the work undertaken there and this was further highlighted when she also joined the local Lions Club that donated funds for the Macmillan Unit. Ann served as Treasurer, VIce President and as President of the Club organised two 'Family Fun Days on the Quomps' with the majority of the profits being donated to the Macmillan Unit. Ann was presented with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award by the Club which is awarded for exceptional service to the community. Several friends have been looked after in the Unit during their final days and Ann is very appreciative of the wonderful care they received.

Ann is also on the Committee of the Christchurch Cancer Research UK Fundraising Committee and is also the Group Leader for the Dorset Myeloma Support Group for Myeloma UK as her husband has this incurable blood cancer. Ann is also a soft touch when it comes to being a Nana to her granddaughter!

Ann was delighted to be appointed a Trustee in 2024.
