AFC Bournemouth women have been named Ambassadors of the charity which supports the Macmillan Unit hospice.
The team which finished an impressive second in their maiden National League campaign last season, becomes the official figurehead of Macmillan Caring Locally, the charity which supports the hospice, which is situated in the grounds of Christchurch Hospital and provides palliative care for over 1600 people each year.
Lin Sharp, Fundraising and Communications Director for the charity said: “We are absolutely over the moon to have all these talented and very dedicated footballers on ‘our team’.
“As well as being fantastic athletes and tremendous role models, they are part of a football club which, like Macmillan Caring Locally, is deeply rooted in and dedicated to its community.”
Lin continued: “The whole team has kicked off its support by signing a canvas which will be part of our Canvas for the Mac event in November 2022, which will feature dozens of signed celebrity canvases for auction.
“We also have some great fundraising events coming up in 2022/23, some of which might challenge even the fittest footballers too! And we can’t wait to work with them.”
As well as their impressive league finish, AFC Bournemouth women also recorded their best ever run in the Women’s FA Cup, reaching the second round and narrowly losing to third tier side Portsmouth.
Their ambition this season is to win the league and take a well-earned place in tier three. And they have already made an excellent start to the new season.
Steve Cuss, AFC Bournemouth women’s manager, said: “Myself and the team are very pleased to become ambassadors for such a fantastic cause. The Club has always had a very close connection to its local community so to be working with MacMillan Caring Locally is something we will all take great pride in.”
