MND Study Day
On November 17th, Jane Martin, MND Nurse Specialist and the MMU MND Team , provided a Dorset Wide Study Day on Motor Neurone Disease at the Marsham Court Hotel, Bournemouth. . The day was attended by 120 health and social care professionals from across Dorset & Hampshire to improve both management & support from diagnosis to end of life for people with MND locally. The day was supported by both MacMillan caring Locally and the East Dorset & New Forest MNDA.
Subjects covered diagnosis and symptoms, swallowing difficulties, respiratory support , environmental controls developments, psychological care and the difficult decisions regarding the placement of feeding tubes. In addition , Jan Clarke, Consultant MND Nurse from UCLH London, spoke about Secretion Management and Dr Nick Cole, Head of Research at the MNDA updated all regarding the latest research developments to provide some hope going forward in MND care.
Concluding the day, a person with MND gave an inspiring talk about the reality of this difficult and challenging illness. This reminded us of how important it is to listen to What Matters to each individual under our care and motivated all to continue to improve our MND Service and care to all those affected by MND.
The day provided an opportunity for networking , to further provide promote a collaborative and co ordinated approach to our MND care locally which will enable effective, timely and supportive care. The feedback and evaluation of the day from all delegates was excellent and demonstrated a need for ongoing educational opportunities in the future.
