It is with great sadness we announce the death of our retired Macmillan Unit gardener and friend Eric Jesty. Eric’s family and friends are in our thoughts.
Eric cared deeply about the Macmillan Unit gardens, and his hard work and passion showed in the beautiful array of colours all year round. A common site during the Summer months are people stopping to admire the rose gardens he tended, and pausing to take in the beautiful scents.
The award winning gardens are a very important part of the Macmillan Unit. They are a haven of tranquillity and are cherished by our patients, visitors, staff and volunteers. Eric would often be seen pruning his roses while sharing a joke and some gardening tips with our patients. There was always laughter. Fresh cut roses would regularly appear on patients’ breakfast trays or in staff offices.
We refer to the staff and volunteers at the Macmillan Unit as the Mac family. Eric was part of our family and he was our friend. We held a private memorial service for him in the Macmillan Unit garden next to one of the rose gardens, where we shared anecdotes and thanked Eric for the joy he brought to so many.
