Can you help us build our new home by making a significant donation to the Brick by Brick appeal?
Our specialist palliative care unit provides patients and their families with a retreat and a place where they can get the support and care that is so vital when suffering with a terminal illness. The staff and volunteers who run the unit are dedicated, incredible people who give so much for our patients and this is reflected in the feedback received by the unit.
“In April 2017 I lost my Mum to cancer. She spent her last hours in the Macmillan Caring Locally unit. By that time all hope was gone but the members of staff and volunteers exhibited the very best qualities found in humankind. They provided dignity to my mum and treated her with respect. I want to share one small story with you all. They suggested that Dad and I left Mum’s room to take a break and grab a cup of tea. Mum was no longer able to talk and was lapsing in and out of consciousness. When I returned, 20 minutes or so later, I found two volunteers in her room chatting, including mum in a three-way conversation about nothing in particular. The amazing thing is that they didn’t see a cancer patient who was dying, they just saw my Mum. And that is what makes them special.”
However, built in 1974, the unit is struggling to support the services our team strive to provide or an environment that is fit for purpose to care for our patients.
The Brick by Brick appeal will be launched to raise funds to build a new Macmillan Unit. With your help, we can build a new palliative care unit that will provide our patients with a restful and homely environment in which to spend their precious remaining time. The new building, while not feeling like a hospital, will be designed to accommodate the needs of patients with life limiting illnesses.
Due to the generosity of our local community, we have been able to set aside £5M for a new building over the last 35 years. However, we still need to raise a further £5M to complete and equip the new unit.

We offer a tailored service to meet your needs as a major donor, we will acknowledge your gift in the most appropriate way for you and your family or ensure anonymity if required. Maybe you would like to fund a bedroom or consultant’s room and name it after a loved one? Or perhaps some state-of-the-art technical equipment is more appealing? You may prefer to fund ongoing costs over several years and become an ambassador for our work? There are many possibilities and we will work with you to find the right project.
